A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE FLUCTUATIONS OF THE MICROPHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF CLOUD AND FOG IN HENG SHAN.

Abstract

The paper studies experimentally the fluctuations of the absolute total concentration of cloud and fog droplets in a natural environment and the spectral profile of cloud drops by means of the continuous sampling technique. It is shown that the cloud drop concentration in the middle and lower regions of stratocumulus exhibit fluctuations with a spatial scale of 1 - 6 meters and that the values of these fluctuations may reach 30 - 100%. Fluctuations in the profiles of the cloud drop spectra are related to variations in concentration. Within the scale of fluctuations, the cloud drop spectra are characterized by the abundance of small droplets in regions of low concentration and large drops in regions of high concentration. Even under the conditions of uniform concentration over a broad range, fluctuations in the droplet spectra could still occur in a small volume because of the stochastic nature of the distribution and dispersion of cloud drops. This type of fluctuation becomes very small in samples of more than 1,000 - 2,000 drops. (Author)
