ACOUSTIC SPECIFICATION OF SPEECH.

Abstract

Speech production studies involved EMG of facial muscles, recording of lip and jaw movements and methods of data reduction of cineradiographic material. The problem of vowel formant normalization is reviewed. Electrical glottography was found to be useful. Speech perception studies revealed categorical effects in vowel perception. Consonant cues are discussed in the light of confusion test data. The theory of distinctive features is given a comprehensive discussion. (Author)
