AFTER SHOCK SEQUENCE AND CRUSTAL STRUCTURE IN THE REGION OF GREECE.
Abstract
The study of crustal structure in Southeastern Europe categorizes crustal and upper mantle structure by using traveltimes of body waves and study of crustal structure by using dispersed wave data. Accurate determination of P and S wave velocities for the predominant phases has been made. Group and phase velocities along several paths in the region considered have been determined. The crustal thickness varies between about 25 km in Eastern mediterranean and about 50 km in Balkans. The aftershock and foreshock sequences of all the large earthquakes (M 6) which occurred in the region of Greece since 1910 have been studied. Interesting results about the time distribution, magnitude distribution and deformation characteristics have been found. (Author)
