DEVIATIONS FROM STANDARD ALTITUDE SEPARATIONS DUE TO ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS.

Abstract

In order to provide a firmer basis for evaluating standards for vertical separations, e.g., permit 1,000 foot separations above 29,000 feet, a determination is made of the deviations from the assumed 1,000 foot standard vertical separations of aircraft when actual atmospheric temperature distributions are considered. Other errors contributing to the variations of vertical separation are not considered. The assumed 1,000 foot standard vertical separation is decreased to less than 900 feet with some frequency over some localities at certain times of the year at some altitudes because of the occurrence of temperatures 10% below the standard temperature.
