RESTRICTED VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE AND THE SOLUTION OF RADIATIVE TRANSFER EQUATION,

Abstract

The use of restricted variational principles in the study of irreversible thermodynamics and kinetic theory is quite well-known. Especially in the latter case, the use of variational techniques in connection with Mott-Smith's method (using bimodal distribution) removes the arbitrariness of finding the additional moments. The moment equations containing the effect of collisions are determined by the variational principle. In the present note we shall use this restricted variational principle for solving the radiative transfer equation for a grey gas. (Author)
