STRUCTURAL ROLE THEORY AND THE DEFINITION OF THE WORKER'S SITUATION: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY.
Abstract
A definition is given of the formal role of the worker in his situation based on the elements of structural role theory. The role is only one part of the total 'actual' or 'operational' role of the worker. The actual role is the augmentative of the formal role by the relationships comprising the informal interpersonal role of the person who occupies a position. This informal role is described from the observation of the individuals overt recurrent interpersonal behavior during the adoption of the formal role; and from the analysis of how the individual judges the social and physical conditions under which the overt behavior is shown.
