ENERGY TRANSFER IN PARTICLE-SURFACE INTERACTIONS IN HYPERVELOCITY FLIGHT: COMMENTARY AND BIBLIOGRAPHY,

Abstract

The memorandum reviews thermal-energy transfer in particle-surface interactions and presents an extensive, partially annotated bibliography of literature relevant to this field. The subject area is limited to nonreactive energy transfer between neutral gas molecules and surfaces at energy levels of interest to gas dynamicists and hence is extended, in these terms, from the energies associated with gases at low temperatures to those associated with the velocities of satellites. A summary of values of the thermal accommodation coefficients obtained over the years is given, and the experimental methods used and the current interpretation of the results are reviewed. A discussion and evaluation of current and past theoretical work in this area is also included. (Author)
