HUMAN FACTORS RESEARCH IN SUPPORT OF ARMY AVIATION,

Abstract

Three papers were presented as part of a symposium concerned with human factors implications in Army aviation performance and training. The first paper deals with human factor problems in complex systems, particularly problems encountered in the aerial reconnaissance and surveillance subsystem of the Combat Intelligence System. The initial concern has been to improve human effectiveness in collecting battle area information through new training methods and techniques. The second paper deals with the effectiveness of the synthetic helicopter flight training devices and their usefulness for transfer of training from a rotary-wing instrument flight qualification course to performance on the actual helicopter. The third paper concerns research on aviator stresses during combat missions. The research objectives were to provide the Army with readily usable information to variables that affect aviator performance, and to integrate this information into a system of performance prediction.
