ANALYSIS OF TOROIDAL SHELLS OF CIRCULAR CROSS-SECTION WITH INITIAL DISPLACEMENTS.

Abstract

The role of initial displacements in the analysis of toroidal shells under various loading conditions was pointed out by deriving the shell equations of Zenova and Novozhilov, which were modified such as to include the highest-order terms in initial displacements. It was shown that the stresses and displacements are very sensitive to the imperfections in the case of uniform pressure; on the other hand, the analysis is comparatively immune if the loading consists of forces or moments applied to the edges of the shell.
