A CONNECTION BETWEEN SU(3) AND O(4),

Abstract

It is shown that the insertion of a barrier, in the isotropic harmonic oscillator and in the hydrogen atom, gives each system the higher symmetry usually associated with the other. The result is more general: the imposition of a reflection condition can change the symmetry from SU(3) to O(4), and vice versa. This may have implications for elementary particle symmetries.
