AN EXPERIMENT WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GEOMAGNETIC MAP FROM DATA OF AN ARTIFICIAL EARTH SATELLITE.

Abstract

Presented is a map of the total intensity of the magnetic field above the territory of the USSR, constructed from measurements taken by the third artificial earth satellite. For the reduction to a single altitude (400 km is the altitude at which most measurements were taken) gradients were used, which were computed on the basis of a spherical harmonic analysis of the universal magnetic map of 1955, compiled by IZMIR AN USSR. The precision of the obtained map was evaluated (350 gamma) and the conclusion drawn that it presents a reliable picture of the geomagnetic field above the territory of the USSR.
