ENGINEERING AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS: SOME DIRECTIONS FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH,

Abstract

In general, engineering and public affairs education should prepare a student to: (a) Possess the tools needed to obtain a quantitative understanding of technical and social phenomena and their interaction; (b) Be able to formulate and test predictive 'models' for the phenomena and their interactions; (c) Understand and be able to work with the environment; (d) Understand and be able to apply systematic methods for analyzing and synthesizing complex, interacting, large-scale systems, in which many things may be uncertain.
