OCEANOGRAPHIC EFFECTS ON PLASTIC ENGINEERING MATERIALS,

Abstract

The continuing investigation of oceanographic influences on a wide spectrum of plastic engineering materials, reinforced laminates and other plastics, has been in progress. Submersible Test Unit II-2 (STU II-2) test panel array, which is discussed, represents one segment of this continuing effort. This panel array was submerged 13 April 1965 for 402 days at a depth of approximately 2,370 feet in the Port Hueneme Pacific Ocean Area. Due to circumstances beyond control, mechanical evaluation of specimens were not conducted until approximately eleven months after retrieval. However, the evaluation indicated that, in the main, the mechanical properties were adversely affected to a greater degree than those of specimens in previous exposures. (Author)
