CONFIGURAL ANALYSIS,

Abstract

Multivariate analysis in psychology is perennially criticized for its overweening reliance on linear, additive models. The critical viewpoint holds that the convenience of linear functions of first degree variables is purchased, in many situations, at the expense of accuracy and heuristics. The area of configural analysis is concerned with providing remedies for these asserted deficiencies by developing means for seeking out and coping with nonlinearity and nonadditivity. The two main approaches in this area may be termed analysis among entities and analysis among attributes. The purpose of this paper is to examine the major developments of the two approaches, with emphasis on the second. (Author)
