A METHOD FOR WEIGHT OPTIMIZATION OF FLAT TRUSS-CORE SANDWICH PANELS UNDER LATERAL LOADS

Abstract

A method is presented for optimizing, on a weight basis, flat truss-core sandwich panels under lateral loads. To solve this type of problem by equating the stress level for all failure modes requires a knowledge of the stress distribution throughout the panel for the given loading. There are no available stress analysis methods of sufficient sophistication for corrugated panels under lateral loading; hence, a large portion of this report is devoted to the development of such a method of analysis. The method is essentially a deformation method; however, a technique of using Fourier type transformations makes the solution more tractable.
