UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC IMAGING.

Abstract

The report describes research in underwater acoustic imaging performed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Company during the nine-month period ending 30 April 1967. Included is a general discussion of the analytical approach used in studying acoustic image formation, as well as specific results which illustrate relationships between object characteristics, lens parameters, methods of insonification and acoustic image-converter parameters. A description is given of the theory of operation and current embodiment of the LMSC Acoustic Image Converter. Acoustic images realized with this converter are illustrated and discussed, with special attention given to those obtained under conditions of high turbidity, as well as with specularly reflecting objects.
