SYNTHESIS OF CARBORANE MODIFIED FLUOROCARBON ELASTOMERS.

Abstract

C-isopropyl-c'-bromotrifluorovinylcarborane was synthesized. This did not polymerize with peroxide catalyst. The use of vinyl- or allylcarborane in peroxide initiated emulsion systems with commercial fluorocarbon monomers inhibited all polymerization except for one isolated case of a vinylidene fluoride-vinylcarborane resin. Here a copolymer was apparently formed. With Cobalt Co60 initiation, fluorocarbon polymer (TFE) was formed in the presence of allylcarborane. A mechanical mixture of a carborane and a fluorocarbon elastomer caused a decrease in the decomposition temperature, as evidenced by Differential Thermal Analysis. (Author)
