A REVIEW OF SEVEN PAPERS CONCERNING THE MEASUREMENT OF TEMPERATURE IN THE STRATOSPHERE AND MESOSPHERE,

Abstract

Seven papers concerning the measurement of atmospheric temperature between the altitudes of 30 and 60 km were chosen for study. The spherical bead thermistor serves as the temperature sensing element in each case. The heat transfer equations which are common to all treatments are discussed. Each paper is then considered, giving the physical characteristics of each instrument and the values chosen by each investigator for the various heat transfer parameters. The resulting rates of energy transfer for each heat transfer process, as applicable to a particular instrument at 60 km, are listed with the corresponding temperature corrections. The total corrections to the temperature at 60 and 50 km are also listed. The conclusions of each investigator, as stated by the investigator, are included. A summary of all results is then presented. The correction values, as determined by each investigator, are arranged in tabular form so that they may be compared. In cases where the comparison indicates that there is a major difference in the value of a particular quantity, an opinion is given for the cause of the difference. (Author)
