EFFECT OF LEVEL OF DISTRACTING NOISE UPON SPEAKING RATE, DURATION, AND INTENSITY.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of four levels of distracting noise upon the following speech variables: (a) words per minute; (b) relation of speech time to total time; (c) mean syllable duration; (d) mean speech intensity level above an arbitrary reference level. The subject's judgment of perceived loudness of the barrier signal also was investigated.
