THE EFFECT OF TANGENTIAL ACCELERATION ON THE MOTION OF A SATELLITE.

Abstract

The problem of the motion of a satellite under the effect of tangential acceleration, created by a low-thrust engine, has been solved in other works. This problem is of interest because numerical computations show that the tangential control of the engine thrust approximates well the solution of the problem of the optiminal boost of the satellite. An asymptotic computation of the effect of a reduced tangential acceleration on the motion of a satellite is given in this work by the averaging method. The first approximation solution computed is correct for arbitrary values smaller than a unit of the eccentricity of the satellite unit. The other approximation solution computed is for the problem in the case of near-circular orbits. (Author)
