MAIN RESULTS OF GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH'S CRUST IN THE BLACK SEA BASIN.

Abstract

The committee for the study of the structure and movement of the earth's crust in the Black Sea basin drew up a plan for a series of thematic investigations. This investigation was designed to accomplish the complex study of this water basin and its surrounding areas. The subject was assigned to the Geophysical Institute of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in Simferopol' in 1962. Results of investigations in this field, preliminary (1963) and final (1964) were presented in Crimea at successive meetings of the committee. The translation is a brief report of the findings: On the basis of seismic and gravimetric data, it is shown that the structure of the earth's crust in this basin, like in other inland seas, is of the intermediate type. In the central part of the basin the granite later is absent and the thickness of the crust is 22-25 km, whereas on the seacoast it is 35-45 km. The thickness of the sedimentary complex increases from 5-8 km around the sea to 15 km in the central part of the sea. (Author)
