INVESTIGATIONS ON THE ROLE OF ELECTRON CARRIERS IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN CELL-FREE SYSTEMS.
Abstract
A summary is given on the use of p-phenylenediamines as artificial electron donors and quinones as electron acceptors in investigations on the mechanism of electron transport of chloroplasts and photosynthetic bacteria. p-Phenylenediamines bypass the DCMU inhibition site of electron transport, DAD being the best electron donor for chloroplasts described so far. NADP reduction in chloroplasts at the expense of DAD is coupled to ATP formation, but at the expense of TMPD is not. NAD reduction in particles from Rhodospirillum at the expense of DAD is antimycin sensitive. Detailed studies of these systems give indication as to the location of the phosphorylating site and on the function of plastoquinone and of plastocyanin. Quinones were used as artificial electron acceptors in the study of the photooxidation of ascorbate and in the light inactivation of chloroplasts. Disalicylidenediamines are described as inhibitors of photosynthetic NADP reduction in chloroplasts, but not in photosynethetic bacteria. (Author)
