ON THE STRESSES NEAR A CRACK IN AN ELASTIC SHEET.

Abstract

The report considers the (two-dimensional) stresses near a crack in an infinite elastic sheet under uniform all-round tension. The analysis differs from classical theory in that account is taken of the varying shape of the crack. It is shown that in the vicinity of the tips of the crack the stresses increase non-linearly with the applied load; these stresses also depend on the magnitude of Young's modulus itself. (Author)
