VERTICAL EXAGGERATION IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL MAPPING.
Abstract
The experiments reported upon indicate that 3-D maps can and should be made with vertical exaggeration. The approximate amount of vertical exaggeration needed to create 'realistic' maps has been found to correlate with the contour interval of the base map. It has also been shown that skilled map-readers can consistently evaluate 3-D maps. The report contains all of the data collected in the experiments and includes a large number of illustrations of 3-D maps. The vertical exaggerations to be used in different mapping situations are presented in graphic form. (Author)
