DIRECT AND INVERSE SOLUTIONS OF GEODESICS

Abstract

This Technical Report supersedes TR No. 7 entitled: INVERSE COMPUTATION FOR LONG LINES: A NON-ITERATIVE METHOD BASED ON THE TRUE GEODESIC, which is out of print. It contains the material of the original publication of 1950, and in addition, formulas pertaining to long lines, derived through the years at AMS. The solutions of the Direct and Inverse Geodetic Problem are presented in forms which are adaptable to desk calculator and to electronic computer. The maximum errors in the solutions due to the omission of higher order terms have been determined and are presented in tables in the Appendix. These tables will enable the user of the solutions to decide whether the accuracy requirements can be obtained with or without the higher order terms. These higher order terms have been derived and are presented herein.
