IRRADIATION OF KCL CRYSTALS CONTAINING KSH.

Abstract

When crystals of KCl containing KSH are irradiated with X-rays at room temperature a prominent U-band develops, thus confirming the reaction SH(-) to H(-) + S-i where H(-) denotes a hydride ion on a normal lattice site and S-i an interstitial S atom. Photolysis with u.v. light at 10K results in the above reaction and also in the reaction SH(-) to H-i + S(-). Thus excited SH(-)* ions can break up in either of two ways, neither of which requires much thermal energy. (Author)
