INTERMOLECULAR POTENTIAL ENERGIES BY A MOLECULAR BEAM SCATTERING METHOD.

Abstract

A crossed molecular beam machine was constructed and tested. Mechanical velocity selection is used to obtain monoenergetic beams. Each beam is chopped, and the resulting doubly modulated output signal is analyzed. The energy range is from 0.02-0.95 eV. The velocity dependence of the total collision cross section was measured for the scattering of lithium atoms by 18 different atoms and molecules. Data analysis is not complete, but the results will lead to potential energy information relevant to chemical reactions. (Author)
