IONOSPHERIC RESEARCH.

Abstract

The Statement of Work for the research to be performed under Contract AF 19(628)-4050 called for research directed toward the investigation of the lower ionosphere. Specific emphasis was placed on the design, conduction and analysis of rocket-borne A. C. conductivity probes and radio wave propagation experiments. These objectives have formed the basis for the studies outlined in this report. As stated in Section I, the present contract has been one of related efforts underway in the Ionosphere Research Laboratory during the period of interest. It is a continuation of Part B of the original contract (AF19(604)-8012), pertaining to D and lower E-region rocket measurements. Following certain introductory material an outline of each investigation performed under the contract is given. These are related to former efforts described in the Final Report for Contract AF 19(604)-8012. The problems outlined fit under the broad categories of electromagnetic theory studies, ionospheric phenomena, ground based and rocket equipment development and the physics of ionospheric formation. A listing of the reports issued and in preparation, paper publications and presentations, and similar matters comprises Section III of the report. A listing of the personnel that were actively employed in this work is given in Section IV. The report is concluded with an Appendix containing the abstracts of Scientific Reports issued by the Laboratory under the support provided by this contract. (Author)
