CONTENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF POTASSIUM AND CREATINE IN RATS,
Abstract
Concentration and distribution of potassium and creatine in muscle and nonmuscle tissues were studied in 52 albino rats (40 males and 12 females). The potassium to protein ratio of the entire skeletal muscle system was found to be remarkably constant, regardless of age or sex differences. The potassium to protein ratio of the nonmuscle tissues, on the other hand, was highly age dependent. Accordingly, there was a rapid increase, from age 39 to 70 days, in the percentage of total body potassium found in muscle; however, from age 71 days and beyond, 55.58 plus or minus 2.32% of total body potassium was found in muscle. There was a significant difference (P<0.01) in the concentration of creatine in muscle protein between young (39 to 70 days old) and adult (71 days and beyond) rats. Such age differences were not observed in creatine concentration of nonmuscle protein. Of total body creatine, only 78.81 plus or minus 3.64% was found in skeletal muscle of adult rats. (Author)
