THE STABILITY OF A SINGLE-DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM FREE GYRO,

Abstract

A particular single degree of freedom free gyro with a simple proportional servo is investigated and found to be unstable. Further study reveals that the introduction of a lead + lag network into the servo can achieve stability. Calculations reveal that no significant loss in stability is suffered when the lead + lag is replaced by a simple lag. Near optimum realizable stability may be chosen with a lag time constant low enough to assure quick response of the gyro with little overshoot. The optimum time constant of the lag network is found to be 0.004 sec. (Author)
