FORCED LONGITUDINAL MOTION OF AN ELASTIC FREE-FREE BAR,
Abstract
Equations of motion are derived and solved for an elastic free-free bar of variable mass and stiffness under the influence of an axial force distribution which varies with time. Viscous damping is assumed subject to the restriction that the damping coefficient is proportional to the mass per unit length of the bar, this restriction being necessary in order to obtain a problem which can be solved by the use of the normal modes of vibration. For the sake of convenience, the fundamental properties of the modes of vibration are derived herein as there seems to be no readily available reference which covers all the material required, especially when the properties of the bar vary along the length. other information of common knowledge has been included at various stages in the development in order to avoid the necessity of frequent reference to outside material.
