SHIPBOARD MACHINERY ANALYZER.

Abstract

The general purpose of this program was to assess the feasibility of detecting particular types of rolling element bearing damage by utilizing a data processing technique, frequency of binary word occurrence (FOBW) developed by the General Electric Company. The results show that using a particular type of preprocessing involving envelope detection followed by low pass filtering, it is feasible to detect significant signals which appear to be related to damage to the inner ring or to the ball. Furthermore, it is shown that it is possible to find statistically significant trends in the frequency of occurrence of binary words selected by means of computer search. These trends exist prior to the time at which significant signals appear. (Author)
