AN ETHICAL AND MORAL ANALYSIS OF THE DESIGN FOR A MAN-MACHINE COUNSELING SYSTEMS: REACTIONS BY A UCLA GRADUATE CLASS IN COUNSELING.

Abstract

In the design of a man-machine counseling system, the project staff has become more and more concerned about two key objectives. One is to find ways to make school counseling more humanized, using the computer, if possible, as one of numerious means to that end. A second is to develop procedures or processes for system design, development and implementation that are humanistic. One attempt in this direction was to have the counselors from the schools participate in design workshops with the System Development Corporation Staff in formulating the system design. A number of design ideas emerged from these sessions. However, the ideas were primarily oriented to ways in which the computer might be used to assist the counselor. Little emphasis was placed on determining how the counselors might use their newly-found time to help students--or on discovering whether the system, as planned, might even be deterimental to the interests of the student. The opportunity to explore these problems further came in the form of an invitation from UCLA for SDC to participate in teaching a graduate class on moral and ethical considerations in counseling. This document is a compilation of quotations from 16 of the 19 students' term papers examining the design of the man-machine couseling system, giving particular emphasis to evaluating the system from a moral and ethical standpoint. In analyzing these papers, an attempt was made to categorize all the content under major headings. (Author)
