A STUDY OF THE CAUSES OF WIRE ROPE AND CABLE FAILURE IN OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

Abstract

A study has been made, through a literature search and a survey of users and manufacturers, of the causes of failure of wire rope in marine and oceanographic applications. Although the material, construction, and application of wire rope were symptomatic of the majority of causes of failure, incorrect operating procedures and improper choice of related equipment were large factors. Recommendations are made for further investigation and development to improve performance and reliability.
