INITIAL TEST OF IGNITION-INJECTION SYSTEM, EX 6 (3) FOR THE 18 INCH CURTISS-WRIGHT RTV.

Abstract

A 5-stage ignition-injection system employing a fully heterogenous fuel feed designed for attachment to the downstream end of the central body of the Curtiss-Wright RTV was tested. While the over-all performance left much to be desired, all shortcomings were understandable in terms of the dynamic head of the air stream preventing injection of fuel in the 4th and 5th stages. Initial ignition of stages 1, 2 and 3 occurred smoothly and with complete freedom from explosive burning. The unit was shut down and reignited smoothly even after the tracers had exhausted themselves. The design seems to be satisfactory as far as mechanical strength is concerned. (Author)
