FLIGHT TEST OF CTV MK 17, MOD 1, NO 104-BENDIX AUTOPILOT MISSILE (CTV-8A17A),

Abstract

CTV No. 104 was the first CTV autopilot unit. It was fired at USNOTF at Holly Ridge, North Carolina on October 8, 1947. The missile successfully stabilized itself in roll, pitch, and yaw and negotiated a programmed right turn at 14 seconds. At 30 seconds after firing, the pitch flaps had reached maximum deflection, where they remained for the rest of flight. This created enough lift to keep the missile in the air for 100 seconds. The flight can be said to have demonstrated that an autopilot system of control can successfully be used on a CTV. (Author)
