OCEANOGRAPHY USING REMOTE SENSORS.

Abstract

The present status report covers the period from 1 June to 1 September, 1967. The background information of this effort as well as the scientific objectives of the present research program were stated in the Status Report on SPACE OCEANOGRAPHY PROJECT for February 1966 to October 1966. The report describes two successful aircraft flights that were made over the Mississippi Delta region in June and August, 1967. The first of these flights, Mission Number 50, was flown on 12 June 1967 by the NASA 926 CV-240A; there was no 'ground truth' being gathered during this mission. The second of these flights, Mission Number 58, was flown on 30 August 1967 by the NASA 927 P3A; extensive 'ground truth' was gathered on this mission by the Texas A and M University research vessel the R/V ALAMINOS. The report describes new research that has started which is concerned with the use of passive microwave radiometers in determining the temperature, salinity and roughness of natural water surfaces. The status of other research efforts begun earlier are described. A summary of project staffing, facilities and capabilities is given. (Author)
