AN OBJECTIVE METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF THE STREAM-FUNCTION FOR THE NON-DIVERGENT PART OF OBSERVED OCEANIC SURFACE CURRENTS,

Abstract

Objective techniques were utilized for determining the streamfunction for the non-divergent part of a two-dimensional vector field, specifically the surface currents as observed in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico during Cruise 66-A-8 of the Texas A+M University research vessel ALAMINOS in the period 5-22 June 1966. Geomagneticelectrokinetograph data gathered during this cruise were utilized to obtain a two-dimensional vector field with values of the surface current velocity displayed at discrete points on a regularly spaced grid. These values of surface current velocity were employed to estimate the vorticity field from which the streamfunction was estimated at fixed grid points by numerically integrating a form of Poisson's equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Several types of boundary conditions were applied to the boundaries of the region in order to determine that condition which would result in the greatest consistency with the observed GEK vector field.
