EVALUATION OF A HIGH-GAIN VHF/UHF COMMUNICATION FACILITY.

Abstract

This report presents the results of tests performed on the FAA High-Gain VHF/UHF Communications System established in Hawaii to provide increased communications range coverage for air-traffic operating between Hawaii and the U. S. west coast. Observations on tests performed by the antenna contractor, to determine characteristics of the antenna system are also presented. Descriptions of the high-gain communications system and the instrumentation and procedures used for the test effort are provided. The results of the down range flight test indicated that the high-gain communications facility will extend communications range by as much as 68 percent as compared to that provided by the existing FAA RCAG facility. Results of tests performed by the antenna contractor on the communications system indicated that the antennas are generally within design specification. Based on results of the tests, it was concluded that the communications system was acceptable for commissioning to service. (Author)
