DICHROIC FILTER SPECIFICATION FOR COLOR ADDITIVE DISPLAYS: 2. FURTHER EXPLORATION OF TOLERANCE AREAS AND THE INFLUENCE OF OTHER DISPLAY VARIABLES

Abstract

Specification of primaries for seven-color display generation was examined under a wide range of contions, including modifications to the equipment, manipulation of environmental variables, and control of response variables. The basic purpose of this series of studies was to increase the precision of previously determined specifications for dichroic filters to be employed in additive multicolored large-scale displays. The upper tolerance limit for the blue dichroic filter was determined to a high degree of precision. In addition, questions of filter order, character size, and brightness contrast were examined experimentally to determine their influence on filter specification. As a summary contribution, an 'ideal' seven-color additive system is outlined. Finally, recommendations are provided for situations wherein physical restrictions militate against the employment of the full seven color system approach.
