A COUNTER FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ATMOSPHERIC AND EARTH LEAKAGE FLUX OF SECONDARY COSMIC RAY NEUTRONS,

Abstract

A detailed description is given of a neutron counter employed in a combined balloon and rocket experiment, in which the integrated flux of neutrons of energy up to about 20 MeV has been measured as a function of atmospheric depth from 0.1 to 800 gr/sq cm residual pressure. The construction of the Boron-plastic scintillator detector and its operation in phoswich with a plastic scintillator, which suppresses charged-particle background, are discussed. Complete circuit diagrams of the counter electronics and telemetry transmission are given, and the mechanical solutions of the environmental problems involved in the rocket launch are fully described.
