RESEARCH STUDIES OF HIGH-DENSITY PLASMAS.

Abstract

A review of the experimental studies of high-density plasmas made under this contract is given and the application of a high-density plasma in a high-current switch is analyzed. The diagnostic methods using microwave probing, photographic methods, gross light emission from the plasma, spectral radiation from the high-density plasma, magnetic probing, laser interferometers, scattering of laser radiation, and direct measurement of the resistance of the high-density plasma are described and the significant results detailed. The electron density, electron temperature, current flow and motion and size of the plasma determined by these methods are given with both spatial and temporal resolution.
