RESEARCH IN IONOSPHERIC PHYSICS.

Abstract

The Summary Technical Report No. 11 summarizes the research at the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory from 1 February 1967 - 31 July 1967. The report includes discussion of work on the facility, brief discussions of the various research programs, a list of publications and personnel, and a table summarizing accomplishments. Ionospheric studies include measurements of the photoelectron flux, collection of double-pulse data, estimates of ion-neutral collision frequencies, correlations of meteor activity and nighttime E-region electron density, observations of traveling ionospheric disturbances using phase-path sounders and backscatter dish simultaneously, and F-region transport, density gradients, content, and slab thickness. The radar astronomy studies include observations of Venus, Mercury, and the Sun; and dual-frequency lunar observations at 10mus pulse widths. In radio astronomy, the research includes lunar occultation of cosmic radio sources, measurement of apparent angular size of radio sources with two telescopes separated by thousands of miles and not connected electrically, program for locating the positions of a large number of radio sources rapidly, observations of planetary scintillations, and tests of observations at the OH line.
