STRESS DURING INHAUL AND OPTIMUM PAYOUT RATES FOR OCEANOGRAPHIC WIRE USED ON COAST GUARD STATION VESSELS.
Abstract
The results of the studies confirm that great care must be exercised in making casts since it is possible on shallow cast and necessary on deep casts to work below generally accepted safety factors during inhaul. However, if restraint is used in selecting winch speeds during inhaul and if the wire is undamaged, casts can be made to 7000 meters with slight danger of exceeding the elastic limits. Safe payout speeds were found to be a function of depth. If slacking the wire is to be avoided the maximum payout speed should range from about 85 meters per minute at the surface to 160 meters per minute at 3500 meters. (Author)
