DISCOVERY OF A DEEP COUNTERCURRENT AT THE EQUATOR IN ATLANTIC OCEAN ON RESEARCH VESSEL MIKHAIL LOMONOSOV,

Abstract

The results of instrumental measurements of currents in tropical zone of the Atlantic Ocean by expeditions in research vessel 'Michael Lomonosov' in 1959-1963 are given in the paper. The treatment of the data obtained provided the possibility to reveal a powerful deep countercurrent at the Equator between lat. 2N and 2S. This current was named after the great Russian scientist M. V. Lomonosov. A hypothesis was suggested about the origin of the Lomonosov deep countercurrent in the equatorial zone of the Atlantic ocean in accordance with the action of trade-wind field and the formation of deep water with high salinity near South American coast between lat. 16-22S.
