INVESTIGATION OF WATER LAYER WITH OXYGEN MINIMUM IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN IN THE AUTUMN OF 1959,

Abstract

Based on materials collected by the R/V 'M. Lomonosov' and on some previous investigations, the conditions of the oxygen minimum layer formation in the African area of the North Atlantic tropical region are appraised. In the open ocean there is no direct indication of the processes which must lead to great decrease of oxygen. It is to be supposed that the existence of the oxygen minimum layer in the open ocean is, first of all, a result of the penetration of waters carried by the trade wind current from its eastern part.
