BIOGRAPHICAL ZONING OF THE UPPER PELAGIC LAYERS OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON CURRENTS AND DISTRIBUTION OF WATER MASSES,

Abstract

A biogeographical division of the upper pelagic layers of the Pacific that results from the data obtained both before and during the IGY is described. Principles were developed that allow us to distinguish between ecological and biogeographical division of the ocean. The epi-pelagic oceanic flora and fauna may be divided into three main biogeographical regions, i.e. arctic-boreal, tropical and antarctic with transition zones between them (Subantarctic and North Pacific Current). These major regions and their sub-regions tally well with the distribution of water masses that differ from one another in characteristics, origin, and the presence or absence of closed circulation.
