RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD MEASUREMENT OF THE ENERGETIC CHARGED PARTICLE ENVIRONMENT IN NEAR-EARTH SPACE.

Abstract

Instruments for OV2-1, OV2-3, and OV3-1 satellites were modified, refurbished, retested, and recalibrated. Field assistance was provided at systems test, integration, and launch of the above satellites and of three instrument packages for Astrobee vehicles. Engineering evaluation was carried out where successful launch permitted. Satellites OV2-1 and OV2-3 failed to achieve orbit, but OV3-1 was successfully placed in orbit on 22 April 1966. The instruments on this satellite measure protons from 30 ev to 120 MeV and electrons from 30 ev to 5 MeV, with few gaps over the ranges. Post launch engineering evaluation indicates that all of the instruments except one, the proton spectrometer, are operating. (Author)
