THE CRYSTALLOGRAPHY OF EXPLOSIVES. PHASE 1. CRYSTAL STRAIN IN LEAD AZIDE. PHASE 2. CRYSTAL STRUCTURE DETERMINATION BY POLARIZED INFRARED ABSORPTION

Abstract

A report is given of efforts to elucidate the role of crystal lattice strain in the sensitivity behavior of lead azide. Consideration was given to the growth of perfect large crystals of alpha-PbN6; relation of crystal size and growth rate to spontaneous detonation; determination of impact sensitivity; differential thermal analysis; nuclear quadrupole resonance study of lattice strain. A study was also made of the structures of the lattice forms of alpha- and beta-PbN6 by means of polarized infrared absorption.
