INVESTIGATION OF BONDING IN OXIDE-FIBER (WHISKER) REINFORCED METALS.

Abstract

The work is part of a continuing study to determine the effects of various additives on the wetting and bonding of nickel and nickel alloys to single crystal sapphire (alpha-Al2O3). Single crystal sapphire rods were obtained, their strength measured, and single-fiber composite specimens were fabricated. In order to apply the results directly to the behaviour of whisker composites, it is essential that rods used in future work should have high strength; therefore, a flame-polishing rig was constructed and a polishing technique is being developed.
